How To Keep Your Westie Dog White

Our Westie dog called Pepper is lovely and white ( Ops - I'm looking at that westie photo again). To be honest, he has stuck his head in a bucket of soil or it looks that way. I'm afraid that it�s bath time again young man. God you were so cute when you were a puppy.
In keeping him reasonably clean and white; in the overall west highland grooming and health process; I find that brushing him regularly helps greatly, because the dirt and any dead hairs, usually fall off. I would recommend that you try and do this once a week. It then becomes a habit and as we all know, habits are easier to follow. This is just part of the process in how to groom a westie.
In the washing process, my wife uses a shampoo especially formulated for white dogs and this seems to do the best job. It is recommended that for a west highland terrier, they should be groomed every 6-8 weeks and especially in the summer. You have to to imagine what it would be like wearing a fur coat in the hot summer days. iT's cooler with the westie haircut.
We have noticed that Pepper's face has turned a rusty sort of colour under his jaw. Our vet has told us, that this is due to the hair being wet too often. As he seems to drink copious amounts of water, I try to dry this part as often as I can, following the vets instructions. I have found that Pepper has little black grains( for want of a better description) in the corner of each of his eyes on most days and therefore will remove them.
My last recommendation in this overall grooming process to keep our westies at optimum health, I have also found that his scratching decreases if I gave him cooling tablets. Always check with your vet if you are unsure of whether to give yours these tablets.

The Concerns Of The Cat Health Heart Murmur

If a vet listens to the heartbeat of a cat and if they hear any unusual sounds, they may require more tests, but generally, they give the diagnosis of a heart murmur. The vet listens to the heartbeat, heart rhythm and the heart sounds to determine if the heart has any irregularities. The health of the cat determines if any concern for this heart condition exists.
Types of Cat Health Heart Murmurs Two types are physiological and pathological conditions. The physiological murmur results when a fever or anemia is present. The pathological murmur results when a condition affects the valves and heart muscle of the cat. Researchers conducted tests to find out more information on cat health heart murmurs.
A Boston animal hospital conducted a test on one hundred cats and found that twenty-one percent of the cats had a heart murmur. Out of the twenty-one percent, seven cats were given an echocardiography and six cats actually had a heart problem called hypertrophy cardiomyopathy. The result of the study showed that healthy cats may show signs of a heart murmur, but without proper testing, the outcome and diagnosis is inconclusive.
Heart murmurs are measured by grades. Six different types of grades exist from I to VI with grade VI the most severe and grade I mild. Veterinarians grade the heart murmur, but the murmur graded VI does not make it the worst heart murmur to have in a cat.
Cat Health Heart Murmur Issues Some kittens are born with heart murmurs that disappear by the time they reach six months. The incidental heart murmur occurs in cats that appear healthy, but they may show signs of weakness and color changes in the skin and tongue. A cat that shows signs of poor health may also experience heart murmurs. The only way to determine if a heart murmur exists is to run tests.

The Crazy Pet Lady

Ten pets - count 'em. Friends and acquaintances have a lot of questions when they hear that number - "How come you have so many pets?" "Why haven't you been arrested?" "Is it true your mother-in-law hates pets?" ... ("Yikes...yes...hmmm.")
I live in a suburb that has a four pet minimum but somehow I've managed to live in denial by taking home and caring for every wide-eyed kitten or abused and/or homeless pup that has crossed my path. The number village limit meant nothing to me when I decided to foster my third dog, Taffy, who was rescued from a junk yard. Belonging to an suburban animal rescue I went to pick her up at the kennel when I received a call that a neglected three month old puppy had been rescued off the streets. Walking to the back of the kennel I looked through the cage and found her covered in mites and open sores.
I took Taffy home and soaked her a laundry tub of oatmeal bath to relieve the incessant itching. At night, I slept on the sofa in the living room with her because her bad dreams made her cry out and whimper through the entire night.
Taffy has grown to stunningly beautiful Rottweiler mix whose sweet and gentle demeanor is unmatched.
The village limit meant nothing to me when a senior acquaintance called and started to cry. She'd rescued too many kittens since the death of her husband and she needed placement for a six week old white kitten that she found at a construction site. I hung up the phone and said I would help. Now that trembling white kitten is a stunning long-haired adult who is absolutely majestic in his movement.
To say that my husband is a saint is an understatement. He grew up in a home that had no tolerance for pets. Today, his parents� attitude is �animals are for eating.� I grew up in a home that saw countless Siamese kittens groomed for the good life and Schnoodle (Schnauzer/Poodles) puppies be born and raised. In home where domestic dispute was no stranger, I found peace among these innocents.
Watching my children grow I understand the comfort our pets provide. I admire the nurturing skills my children have acquired in returning that comfort. I see a responsible attitude that forms in caring for those who came in our home with nothing. In responding to "Why do you have all these animals?", it is because they provide us all a warm place to cuddle when the world seems just a little too big."

You own, or are thinking of owning, an alpaca pet on your farm. Alpacas are gentle creatures that will bring years of pleasure if properly cared for. Below are 7 deadly mistakes that you can avoid so your camelid friend will be with you until old age.
Mistake # 1 - Insufficient fencing
Your alpaca pet will not challenge a fence. Your fencing should be made to keep predators out. Neighborhood dogs are the #1 killer of alpacas. Be sure and provide a fence that predators can not get over, under, or through. Read more about alpaca fencing.
Mistake # 2 - Not checking for poisonous plants
Your Alpaca pet is a ruminant. They eat weeds, bark off wood posts, and anything else they want to try. They can not tell if what they are eating is good for them or not. You must do that for them. Your pastures and your yard must be free of plants that are poisonous to alpacas. Many ornamental plants are poisonous to alpacas.
Mistake # 3 - The open gate
Forgetting to close a gate behind you leaves your alpaca pet open to mistakes number 1 and 2. Without a fence to protect them, all alpacas can do is run from a prey. If they get cornered, they will be killed. A pack of dogs or coyotes can bring an alpaca down quickly. If your alpacas stay inside the fenced area, an open gate allows predators to get inside and kill.
You may have taken the time to be sure your home is free of poisons but your neighbors haven't. An open gate allows your alpaca to roam and possibly get into your neighbors poisonous ornamental plants.
Mistake # 4 - Improper fencing material
Those wood split rail fences look fantastic. White rail horse fencing looks pristine. Field fencing is cheap. None of these will work for your alpaca pet. Use 2 x 4 wire no climb fencing. Use any of the other fencing and you are taking a chance with your alpacas life. The first two are just too open, allowing predators into your pastures. The holes on field fencing are just too large. An alpaca can stick it's head through and die. Their heads may not come back through as easily and they will panic and strangle.
Mistake # 5 - Not shearing

You own, or are thinking of owning, an alpaca pet on your farm. Alpacas are gentle creatures that will bring years of pleasure if properly cared for. Below are 7 deadly mistakes that you can avoid so your camelid friend will be with you until old age.
Mistake # 1 - Insufficient fencing
Your alpaca pet will not challenge a fence. Your fencing should be made to keep predators out. Neighborhood dogs are the #1 killer of alpacas. Be sure and provide a fence that predators can not get over, under, or through. Read more about alpaca fencing.
Mistake # 2 - Not checking for poisonous plants
Your Alpaca pet is a ruminant. They eat weeds, bark off wood posts, and anything else they want to try. They can not tell if what they are eating is good for them or not. You must do that for them. Your pastures and your yard must be free of plants that are poisonous to alpacas. Many ornamental plants are poisonous to alpacas.
Mistake # 3 - The open gate
Forgetting to close a gate behind you leaves your alpaca pet open to mistakes number 1 and 2. Without a fence to protect them, all alpacas can do is run from a prey. If they get cornered, they will be killed. A pack of dogs or coyotes can bring an alpaca down quickly. If your alpacas stay inside the fenced area, an open gate allows predators to get inside and kill.
You may have taken the time to be sure your home is free of poisons but your neighbors haven't. An open gate allows your alpaca to roam and possibly get into your neighbors poisonous ornamental plants.

Those wood split rail fences look fantastic. White rail horse fencing looks pristine. Field fencing is cheap. None of these will work for your alpaca pet. Use 2 x 4 wire no climb fencing. Use any of the other fencing and you are taking a chance with your alpacas life. The first two are just too open, allowing predators into your pastures. The holes on field fencing are just too large. An alpaca can stick it's head through and die. Their heads may not come back through as easily and they will panic and strangle.

The Love of a Pet Owner

You�ve received the forwarded e-mails, I�m sure. The ones with the adorable and funny animal pictures � the cat flushing the toilet, the dog wearing sunglasses and the bird wearing mother�s jewels. There is no doubt that we are entertained by such lovable furry creatures, but why is this? Perhaps it is because even the best-trained of our pets are like children � spontaneous in their actions and always ready to give love to the person who needs it. These are the reasons that children and pets alike endear themselves to us.
We live in a dog-eat-dog world, if you would please forgive the pun! The daily stresses of finances, a commute, family tensions and political turmoil do much to cause anxiety. This is why we are so happy when a mundane day is broken up with episodes of lightness and humor � often provided by animals!
Pets are known to bring comfort to their owners � young and old � and have even been heroes in instances where a rescue was necessary. Haven�t you heard of Spot, the Dalmatian who smelled smoke and ran out into the street, barking until someone came to help his unconscious owner? What about fluffy, the Himalayan who recognized a rodent-like creature creeping towards her owner�s crib and promptly killed it, saving the baby? It is easy to understand our fascination with animals.
People treat their pets better than ever before and both brick-and-mortar and online stores are stocked full of toys, accessories and treats for these animals. Many owners will spare no cost when purchasing a bed for Muffin or a collar for Duke. In fact, pets are now included in a family sitting for their annual photo. Dogs and cats are sent to obedience schools and day care � often at the same cost one might spend on private school tuition for their human children.
This is no joke and the individuals who feel this way about their pets will be the first to tell you so! An especially hard time for these families is when Rover or Socks passes away, leaving behind only memories and perhaps a few catnip toys hidden behind the couch in the rec room. A full-blown funeral ceremony may be necessary � much more than the under-tree burial of olden days. Support of family and friends can help during the grieving process along with a few kind words remembering a fond experience with Mitzy or Bangles.
Still, if you are not a pet owner yourself, you may still find pleasure in having funny animal pictures adorn your home � a friendly face and conversation piece without the super-duper pooper scooper and midnight barking at the moon.

Pet Portraits - Six Tips For The Perfect Pet Portrait

Do you have a faithful animal companion that you'd like to commemorate with a keepsake that forever captures his distinct personality? Pet portraits can be a treasured gift for yourself or for a special animal lover in your life.
Below are some tips to make sure the portrait of your beloved pet turns out perfectly.
1. Find the right artist. Is there a local chamber of commerce or art organization who can provide you with a list of local artists? Check the newspaper for a local art festival to browse many artists in one setting. If you already know of an artist whose style you like, do an online search for their name to find their contact information. Whichever method works for you, make sure you find an artist who specializes in pet portraiture; an artist who paints landscapes or human portraits may not be comfortable painting animals. By the same token, make sure you find an artist who uses a technique that appeals to you - whether that's watercolor, oil, or pastels. Every artist has a different style and method of painting, so be sure you find someone whose style appeals to you, or you won't be happy with the finished product.
2. Know what you want. You found the perfect artist! However, before you contact them, you should be prepared with the details of what you want. Find the best pictures of your pet - the photos should be as large as possible, well lit, and in focus. Make a note of which one is your favorite, and decide if you want the artist to change anything about the picture. For example, if your favorite photo shows your pet relaxing on your living room floor, but you'd prefer an outdoor scene for the background, make sure this is clearly communicated.
3. Beware of digital photos. Just about everyone has a digital camera these days, and many artists will accept digital photos through email. A word of caution, though - colors can differ widely depending on the computer, monitor, software, and printer used. If you only send digital pictures, you may end up being surprised at how significant the color change is in your pet's portrait. If all you have are digital photos, you should first take the files to your local photo store to have them professionally printed to reduce the chance of any color problems. Look over the prints to be sure the coloring is accurate before sending them along to your artist.
4. Size does matter. The next thing to consider is what size painting you want. The price of the painting will vary depending on the size and difficulty of the painting, so be sure you tell the artist what size you would like a quote for, in addition to anything special you want included in the painting. If you're not sure what you can afford, ask the artist for a list of available sizes and the corresponding prices.

Chihuahua - History and Nature

Chihuahua dogs are one of the most highly priced canine breeds in the world. It is nicknamed as Chichi and is considered as the smallest �god� on earth, being honored by the royal Aztecs in the ancient times.o
The Chihuahua dogs are believed to have originated from Mexico. It is named after the state of Chihuahua and was developed from an ancient breed of canine that was larger in size and worshipped by the ancient Aztecs in Mexico. The stone carvings found in the pyramids of the Cholula are what basically support the Chihuahua�s value in the religious life of the ancient Aztec people in the Chihuahua region of Mexico.
The Appearance and Size
The Chihuahua dogs, in terms of size, naturally weigh around 2 to 6 pounds. They stand at a height of only 6 to 9 inches, making it the smallest canine breed on earth.
The Chihuahua appears beautifully with its soft coat. However, it is important to note that the Chihuahua breed comes with a coat that is smooth and long. The smoth coat is noted particularly for its soft and glossy appearance, as well as for its being fully textured. The long coat, on the other hand, is prized significantly for its length, softness and curly or flat appearance. Pet Stains Be Gone

In researching for this Pet Stains Be Gone article, I came across a multitude of stain removal home remedies that I found very interesting and useful. I also found some super ready-made stain removal products.
Being a member of long standing in the current �real world� I understand that there are some of us that really enjoy following a recipe and making our own product to do a job. While there are others that want and need to remove pet stains the �easy way� with a commercial stain product.
With both of these thoughts in mind I am going to fulfill all of your needs.
First of all, I would like to thank all of the people in the Internet world that offered their own home remedies. It is impossible for me to know who you are, but please know if I could; I would send each of you a personal thank you note, for sharing your wisdom with all of us.
For those of you that are interested in the commercial ready to go products, you too, will have many choices.
However, to begin with we are going to bring on the vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, dish detergent, water and towels. Let the pet stain removal begin.
In order to remove pet stains, we have to know where they are; some are usually right before our eyes while others are hidden in deep dark corners.
A black light (which can be purchased on the Internet, pet stores or craft stores) is the perfect tool to have. A black light will be able to pick up any old dried up stains that you never would find otherwise.
Of course, the best stain to find is the fresh one, but truthfully finding no stains is even better. However, if you have a cat or dog, at one time or another you will have to confront a pet stain or two.
Before we go any further, I want to remind you that these suggestions have come from people that have used them on their pet stains. I have not tried them and if I were to use them I would first try the solution on a piece of carpet that is hidden from view or on a piece of scrap carpet. The reason for that is to make certain the solution will not fade the carpet or have any other type of chemical reaction.
Fresh urine stains that are caught almost immediately are among the easiest to remove. The secret here is to blot, blot and blot some more with a clean dry towel. A white towel is recommended, but towels don�t run and I feel any towel that is clean and dry should work well (besides I don�t own a white towel.)
The purpose here is to soak up as much of the urine as you can, stand on the towel to add more weight and pressure.
If you remember to BLOT your carpet as you are cleaning the stains up, you are less likely to damage any of the carpet fibers. Brushing or rubbing tends to fray the fibers and even though the stain is gone, you can tell where the damage was done by the difference in the carpet�s appearance.
The next IMPORTANT thing to remember is DO NOT use ammonia or ammonia based product on any pet stain. The ammonia (it smells like urine to a pet) will attract the pet and encourage it to do the dirty deed again.
When cleaning feces up from a carpet be careful not to scrape the carpet fibers, remove the waste as gently as possible. Wet a small towel with water and dish detergent and gently clean up the rest of the waste with some pressure while blotting the spot. Then mix a � cup of white vinegar with about a quart of warm water and work this solution in to the carpet with your hands (rubber gloves recommended) or a sponge (do not rub hard), blot up with several towels, stand on the spot to apply more pressure.
Remove the wet towels, add several more dry towels folded to add more thickness and place several real heavy books or something else that is heavy on the towels and let sit overnight or at least several hours. Remove the towels, let air dry if not dry and fluff up area with your hand or a very soft brush.
For old stains that you need a black light to find, start out with a tablespoon of dish detergent into a cup of warm water. Slowly work into the stain; blot with a clean dry towel.
Then mix about a 1/3-cup of white vinegar into a 2/3 cup of warm water and work that into the stain blot again. Next use the same detergent solution and work that once more into the spot, blot and rinse with clear warm water. Blot as much of t he water out of t he spot as you can, let air dry and fluff up the carpet carefully. The odor and stain should be gone for good.
I have read that after you have cleaned up the stain using the vinegar and water route it is a good idea to sprinkle baking soda on the spot, let it sit for 24 hours and then vacuum it up and tat certainly will eliminate any possible leftover odor.
Another great tip is to use rubbing alcohol on the spot, some say use full strength and other say to use 1/3 water, 1/3 white vinegar and 1/3 alcohol, do it twice, blot, let dry and vacuum.
Hydrogen peroxide (quart size0 plus1/2 cup baking soda and a tablespoon of dish detergent mixed together and put in a spray bottle, spray the spot and of course, blot, blot and blot some more and then vacuum up.
Some say an inch of table salt spread over the stain and then let it sit for 2 or 3 hours then vacuum will make the stain and odor disappear.
Here are some household product ideas that have worked for some people. Again I advise you to test them on a spot before you jump in and use them.
A tablespoon of �Oxiclean� mixed into a spray bottle of hot water spray onto the stain work it in with your hand (inexpensive rubber gloves are great for this,) blot and let dry.
Another cat and dog lover says pouring �Listerine� straight from the bottle onto the spot, blot and odor is gone.
How about this one, get a bottle of �Awesome Orange Degreaser� from the �Dollar Store� pour it in the carpet and the odor is gone and so is the stain, of course, you need to blot the liquid out of the carpet.
�Simple Green� undiluted sprayed on a urine spot on concrete made the odor disappear completely. The �Simple Green� odor lasted for a few days, but that smelled better than the cat urine.
�Spray and Wash� stain remover, sprayed on to the spot and blotted off supposedly removes the stain and odor.
My last interesting pet stain and odor remover is using �shaving cream� to remove both the stain and odor. Gently work it into the stain and blot it off.
I find home remedies so interesting. I often wonder how did anyone think of using these things to remove stains. My guess is necessity is the power behind invention.
I have found several good sources for �all ready made� pet spot removers. Again I have not tried them because so far my guys have left me stain free except for a few vomit spots on the middle of a clean comforter or two. I truly believe my pet door out into the yard has been my lifesaver.

Having a pet is like having a child, there is never a dull moment. It is a lifetime commitment and I truly feel if you cannot make that commitment, please do not get a pet. Do not adopt a pet and then if the animal displeases you haul it off to the animal shelter to be disposed of.
Animals are living breathing creatures, they give us their love and devotion and they deserve ours in return.

My First Pet Grasshopper

The lush & peaceful greenery was suddenly disturbed by a silent intruder. There was a faint buzzing noise. At a close enough distance, one can actually hear the creature hopping from tree to tree, finding a tasty leaf of its preference. A grasshopper (also known as locust) had infiltrated my home backyard.
I took a closer look at the creature. It was about two inches long from head to tail, green in color & had very long hind legs. It was relatively small for a grasshopper. It can be a daunting task to catch a full grown sized grasshopper. Therefore I was keen to apprehend the puny sized intruder. I approached the little grasshopper ever so slowly. It did not seem to realize my actions as I came from directly behind it. A grasshopper�s eyes are large & can probably view more than 180 degrees on both its sides. Therefore, I was probably coming from its blind spot.
When I came to about a feet of the grasshopper, I opened the palm of my right hand & carefully closed it unto the grasshopper. I did not put much force into my hold as I did not want to harm it & break any of its flimsy looking legs. Thereafter, I managed to trap the grasshopper between the leaf & the curved palm of my hand. The grasshopper did not even see it coming or else it should have had flown away. I felt good because I was in control of another creature�s life. The grasshopper got �owned�! It was no longer free. I was its new Lord! Anyway, it was the first grasshopper catch in my life so I felt that I had actually achieved something special that day.
I asked myself what I was going to do with it. I really wanted to take a closer look at it. I was actually considering making it my pet. In order for it not to die on me, I had to find some important information about grasshoppers. I did not know about what it ate, drank & most importantly how to keep it alive in captivity.
I found out from the internet that grasshoppers ate plants. Also, some information mentioned that grasshoppers do not need to be fed with water. They get most of their water supply from the plants while they are eating. A green leaf is probably as juicy to a grasshopper as a few slices of bread in bowl of chicken soup are to humans.
I took an old clear plastic chocolate box & drilled a couple of small holes on every side of the box for oxygen. Then I took some leaves from the tree where I caught the grasshopper & placed them in the box along with the grasshopper. As a final touch, I took a wooden cap from the depleted oregano shaker & filled it halfway with water. The grasshopper may or may not be drinking from it but anyway, I thought making a private pool for my new pet grasshopper was a good idea. No more problems. No way was the grasshopper going to die under my watch.

When Pets Hate Their Owners

I love pets and have had pets in my home since I was a child. But I had this one parrot that hated my guts. It got so bad that when ever we let it out of its cage it would fly right over to me and begin pecking me on the head. It got to the point where I had to wear an army helmet around the house.
Not only that but it had a vocabulary a sailor would be proud of. Every time I entered my home it would start cursing me out in the most vulgar fashion you could imagine. It was a good thing we didn't have children.
I picked this parrot up at the Humane Society. I didn't know who the previous owner was and didn't know what ordeals this parrot had gone through in the past. All I knew was that it hated my guts.

Anyhow, one day after work I opened the front door of my home and there was the parrot flying around the living room. When it spotted me it made a bee line straight for my head. My army helmet was no where to be seen so I did the only reasonable thing possible - I ducked.
The parrot flew right past me and out the front door - and kept on going. It didn't stop and it didn't turn around to say good-bye. We never saw that parrot again.
That was the only pet I have ever had that hated my guts. I'll never know why but like I said I don't blame the parrot. It was just an innocent animal. But there is one thing I do know - I don't miss that parrot one single bit.

What Do You Do If You Have Big Vet Bills but No Pet Insurance

Less than 0.5% of the 140 million cats and dogs in the United States have pet insurance. For the majority of pet parents, absorbing a large vet bill can pose challenges. While it may not always be possible to avoid the cost, these seven options can help you at least identify ways to keep costs under control.
1. Sign up for a Discount Plan
Pet Assure can help reduce future vet bills. You pay an upfront fee of $99 per year and get a 25% discount for all vet services. The only catch is that you have to go to a veterinary clinic in their network so you'd need to check whether your regular veterinarian is in the network. Key questions to ask before signing up include "Do they include procedures done by another hospital that your vet recommended but that isn't in their system?" and "Are drug costs included?"
2. Negotiate with Your Vet
Most veterinarians are sympathetic to financial concerns and may offer you a discount or payment plan, especially if you're a long-term client. Ask them what they can do for you, you might be surprised at the response.
3. Call Pet Charities
The AAHA Helping Pets Foundation, for example, helps pet parents experiencing financial hardship get access to funds for veterinary care. There are sometimes limits on how much care you can get, usually several hundred dollars in any given year.
4. Use Online Vet Pharmacies
If your main costs are going to come from future drug expenses (for example, insulin shots), you may be better off using an online pharmacy for ongoing prescriptions.
To make the most of this option, ask your veterinarian for two prescriptions � the first for a couple of week's worth of medicine and the other for the remaining time. Fill the short-term script with the vet so you can start the prescription right away and fill the longer term one online to minimize your costs. Your vet might not like it but you are the one paying the costs.
5. Arrange for Credit
Care Credit is kind of like a credit card just for medical treatments and they offer some very flexible payment plans with generous repayment conditions, often much better than a credit card. You must have a satisfactory credit score to be approved and your veterinarian must accept Care Credit (most do).
6. Explore Advanced Surgical Options
Funnily enough, sometimes advanced surgery can be cheaper overall than traditional. For example, the Society of Endovascular Veterinary Surgery is pioneering non-invasive surgery options for veterinary health problems such as liver shunts, collapsing tracheas, and uncontrollable nosebleeds. One benefit of this surgery is that it is less expensive (less rehab required, less recovery time, etc) so you might be able to find a veterinarian in your area who has been trained to perform this surgery - contact the Society to find out.
7. Visit Nearby Veterinary Teaching Facilities
If you have a university nearby with a veterinary school they might be able to get help for much less than you would have to pay otherwise and at very high quality because interns receive supervised training while caring for your pet.
