Just as taking the time to cook your own meals can be healthier than eating out or eating a meal that comes in a box, making your own dog food recipes is a way to both add variety to your pets diet and have more control about what goes into your dogs body. And although making your own dog food recipes can result in a happy, healthy canine who doesnt have a lot of artificial flavors or preservatives, theres also the potential for missteps if you add the wrong foods. If youre starting to cook your own dog food recipes, here are some foods to avoid:
Chocolate
One of the most commonly known things to avoid feeding dogs, you should never add this food to any dog food recipes. The substance theobromine, which occurs naturally in chocolate, is toxic to dogs. While the concentration of theobromine varies in chocolate, with milk chocolate containing the least and bakers chocolate the most. In any case, avoid chocolate in dog food recipes.
Onions
Onions, though they make great flavoring for both human and dog food recipes, can lead to a condition called Heinz body anemia, which destroys red blood cells and can lead to full-blown anemia in dogs. You have a few ways to minimize this risk, such as cutting the onions big enough that they impart some flavor to the food before easy removal before serving, or just leaving the onions out of your dog food recipes altogether. Its been suggested that the biggest danger in this comes from low-quality onions, so if you purchase good-quality onions, you may also minimize the danger. Two Japanese breeds, the Akita and the Shiba Inu are particularly susceptible.
Honey
While an excellent natural sweetener, honey is a food that is dangerous not only in dog food recipes fed to puppies, but if given in any recipe to a human infant as well. The reason behind this is that the honey can contain botulism spores, which dont affect adults due to their strong immune systems, but can affect young animals and humans, who havent built up strong immunities yet. So be sure to leave the honey out.
Alcohol
Great for cooking in recipes for people, dont try to get fancy and put any alcohol in dog food recipes. While wine or sherry make great, flavorful liquids for sauces for people, the alcohol never completely cooks out, and just as with people when its ingested in large amounts, alcohol can be fatal to dogs. Err on the side of caution and leave the alcohol out. By avoiding these dangers in dog food recipes, you will ensure that by cooking for your pet, youre making him or her healthier instead of ill.

How To Give Potty Training To Your Puppy?
By Sumit Bhatnagar
The potty training for a puppy should be started at the earliest. It helps to establish good habits for your pet. If you train your pet well, your pet can never make your house dirty just like that.
In fact, the puppies that are bought from the farms are very easy to be trained. These puppies are accustomed to go for potty only on grass. They do not like to go for potty anywhere else. Therefore, you have to find a grassy place so that they are comfortable.
We have some ideas that will help you to train your pets to learn this.
The first thing is that you need to watch your pets constantly when they are in home. This thing should be done very carefully. When pets are very young, they are very innocent and that is why they have no idea what they are actually doing most of the time!
So, it becomes your responsibility to make sure what they are doing at the initial stages.
The moment you watch your puppy doing potty in the house, take the puppy out of the house right away. Also, making a toilet for your pet outside is a good idea.
You can keep your pet in a crate also. You have to be sure that your puppy gets a proper sized crate. This is very necessary when you can not keep an eye on your puppy constantly.
The right kind of food and the perfect timings to go for potty can help you a lot. Give him his food three times a day.
Once your pet gets adapted to a schedule, you can take him out on a walk at the same time, every day.
These are some of the guidelines that you can follow.

Effects of Food Poisoning on Dogs
By Mark Neal
The effects of food poisoning on dogs can be fatal in some cases and even ordinary foods can be poisonous to dogs so pet owners must beware when feeding their dogs leftovers and tidbits. Regardless of the fact that even well known brands of pet food can cause food poisoning in dogs due to accidental contamination, there are also many foods that contain toxins that are harmful to dogs. For example, some sugarless candies contain xylitol which it has recently been discovered can give dogs food poisoning that can result in liver damage and even death. Chocolate is another everyday product that can have severe side effects in dogs.
There are many signs of food poisoning to look for in dogs such as lethargic movements and a complete loss of appetite. Yellow jaundiced eyes and gums can indicate liver damage and food poisoning in dogs. Vomiting can also be an indication that the dog ingested toxic substances. It can take a number of days before a dog shows any signs of illness but if you fear that they may have eaten poisoned food, take them to a veterinarian even if they seem well.
Preventing Food Poisoning in Dogs
In order to prevent the harmful effects of food poisoning in dogs, there are a number of steps and precautions that pet owners can take. Limiting the amount of raw meat and especially fish that your dog regularly eats can prevent infections caused by bacteria and parasites. Moldy and gone off food should never be given to a dog to save it from being wasted. Chocolate and sweets are not good for dogs because of certain ingredients but also because the fat content is too excessive for a dogs system. Excessive amounts of onion, garlic and other ingredients used in most kitchens can become quite toxic to a dog.
Handling a dogs food should be treated hygienically in the same way as human food should be. Dogs may have stronger stomachs in one sense but they are also sensitive to bacteria and infections. A dog cannot tell its owner if it experiences symptoms that indicate sickness and by the time the symptoms become obvious to the owners eyes, the dog may already have suffered the effects of food poisoning. The longer an illness is allowed to prolong, the more expensive the vets bills will be if the illness becomes serious.

Guinea Pigs Gender - Is It A Boy Or A Girl?
By Florian Ross
Finding if a guinea pig is a female or a male (also called sexing the guinea pigs) is quite easy and it can be done regardless of the age of the guinea pig. You need to carefully pick up the guinea pig and examine its genital area. If you notice a puckered looking spot just above the genital area, it's a good possibility that you're holding a male, but you need to be positive.
Next, press gently just above the genital area. If the guinea pig is a male, his penis should come out. If the guinea pig is young, you can also examine the area around the animal's rectum. A donut-shape also signifies a male because this is where the guinea pig's testicles are located.
While sexing a guinea pig may not sound pleasant and may sound like a downright invasion of the animal's privacy, you should always check instead of relying on the advice of a pet shop worker. Many, many families have been told by the sweet and friendly young people selling these creatures at the local pet store that their new guinea pigs are the same sex only to find out two months later that they've just been blessed with grand pigs (or great grand pigs, depending on who takes care of the animals).
If you don't feel comfortable with the process, do yourself and your family a favor and either don't buy a guinea pig from a pet store or only buy one guinea pig. If you go to a reputable and experienced guinea pig breeder, he or she will be able to tell you with confidence what gender your new guinea pig is.
Ok, now as promised, there are a few differences between male and female guinea pigs that may prompt you to choose one gender over another, although for the most part the positives and negatives basically balance out.
Male guinea pigs are usually somewhat larger than the females, but the difference is not overwhelming. More importantly, the males tend to be much more active than the females, and it may take them longer to calm down with children.
Female guinea pigs, on the other hand, are normally much calmer than the males and are sometimes easier for children to handle. However, if you purchase a female from a pet store or an unreliable breeder, you may end up bringing home more than you bargained for since she could already be pregnant. Overall though, both male and female guinea pigs make excellent additions to almost any family.

Friend Wanted - What's the Right Pet for me?
By Keith Londrie
Without pets our lives would be less fun and defiantly less interesting. If you are an animal enthusiast than stop dreaming of a pet, just go and get one.
Obviously choosing a pet is not an easy task. You should take into consideration quite a lot of things before adopting a pet. The worst thing that can happen is to discover you are unable to take care of your pet after you have adopted it. This can happen because of various reasons and most of all when you havent considered all the responsibilities a pet brings along well in advance.
The first and most important thing to consider is what kind of pet you can take care of and not what kind of pet you want. Any pet, like any human, has specific needs however unlikely a human it fully depends on you. Find your perfect pet match by evaluating your lifestyle with the needs of each breed.
One of the most aesthetic, relaxing and easy to care for is fish. Decorative fish do not require much care and are relatively inexpensive option. Moreover an aquarium will add a lot of style and beauty to your home dcor. Aquariums are the perfect choice for busy people who cannot fully devote to a pet but still would love to have some at home.
Cats and dogs are one of the most desired and the most common choice among pet lovers. However taking proper care of these breeds can be an exhausting and very responsible task. Cats are in a way better as they need less care. You will not need to take them out nor train them as much as a dog. On other hand if you are looking for a real true friend and even support than dogs are the one and only choice. Indeed a dog needs not only proper training but constant care and attention. In return you will receive a devoted friend forever.
Birds are a great choice for everybody who seek fun and do not have a lot of time to spend with their pets. Some bird breeds are a bit difficult to care than others; all kind of birds are noisy and sometimes can create a big mess around their cages, so keep these in mind if you consider taking birds.
The exotic range of pets such as snakes, lizards, tarantulas, turtles, and so on are for the adventurous souls. Each one of the above has very specific requirements and you will need to create special living conditions and take special care. Something to keep in mind these animals hardly can be trained and you will not be able to really play with them.
If course there are much more pets to choose from. If any of the above doesnt match your criteria than just make more extensive research until you come across the type of pet you want. Regardless of your chose make sure you learn enough for the requirements of your future pet, what kind of living environment it will need, what medical care it should receive.

American Bulldog Puppies
By Drew Sire
It has been said that fighting off an American Bulldog off is like fighting off a creature that is part alligator and part python. This characteristic, combined with the American Bulldog's love of children makes them a perfect combination family/guard dog. So the next to you see American Bulldog puppies for sale, you could do worse than to take one home.
Though the first picture one gets in their mind when the word "Bulldog" is mentioned is the squat, broad bulldog of cartoons (which is actually and English Bulldog), the American Bulldog is actually much larger in size. The breed was originally bred for use as guard dogs on farms. They can grow as large as 125 breeds and their coats are short and coarse. American Bulldogs are very smart and easy to train and they are fearless.
However, despite the American Bulldog's imposing appearance and almost unequalled ability at fighting (which of course makes them a fantastic choice as protector of home and hearth), their temperament is gentle, loving and loyal. Despite their size, they make fantastic pets for apartment dwellers because of their low activity level when inside (they do require plenty of exercise and outdoor activity though).
CONFUSION WITH THE AMERICAN PIT BULL
First-time dog owners often confuse the American Bulldog with the American Pit Bull because of their similar builds, including the "block heads" and powerful jaws. That's where the similarities end however. The ears are usually not cropped as they are with the American Pit Bull. Also, Pit Bulls are smaller than the American Bulldog by nearly 30 pounds.
AMERICAN BULLDOGS AND THEIR TEMPERAMENT
As mentioned earlier, American Bulldogs are very sweet, loyal and even tempered. But like all large breeds, they sometimes have a hard time remembering their own strength. Because of this, they should be supervised around the little ones in the family. Theirs is not a real danger of biting with a well-trained dog. But if they aren't watched, and American Bulldog could drag your little tyke all around the neighborhood.
Also, the American Bulldog puppy will bond very quickly with the family and are usually fine with strangers once they get to know them. But your new best friend can be very territorial. Proper training is essential. As puppies, they should be socialized with other people and dogs alike. You don't want your new friend "protecting" you from your family friends and other family members.
SENSE OF HUMOR
And finally, believe it or not, American Bulldogs have a highly defined sense of humor. This breed loves to hide and wait for its prey, usually it's master or other family members. Your new best bud isn't playing this hide-and-seek game out of anger or violencehe usually just thinks that it is funny as evidenced by the grin that is permanently plastered on the little devil's face.

Puppy Dog Training For Obedience How To Train Your Dog Puppy Properly
By Davion Wong
Puppy dog training for obedience is a topic close to the heart of dog lovers. Now, getting a new puppy in the house can be as joyous as having a new baby at home. It brings much excitement to everyone especially the kids. But you need to make sure that buying the puppy is not a decision made in haste or at the spur of the moment. Dogs are living creatures and not just gifts that need no maintenance. Though a little puppy can bring so much laughter and happiness, they do require a great deal of training and when that happens, it is not a fun thing to do. Expect work if you want to train puppy dog well.
Dogs are like human beings. They too have temperament as well. Surprised? A puppys temperament depends on their birth place and his/her breed. So pay a bit of attention here about different breeds and their personalities in order to know how to train your dog puppy correctly. Rottweilers, bull dogs, boxers and German shepherds are guard dogs and they are born with natural instincts to love and protect their human companions. Gun dogs, pointer and Labradors are born and reared as hunting dogs. Because of their background, they are naturally energetic.
Bearded and border collies, on the other hand, being herding dogs are bred and reared on farmland, and are rather active and curious about their surroundings. They are known to love moving around and dont sit still well. You have to be a little careful when you bring them to live in cities as they may be anxious and a bit scared and nervous since they are not used to the modern environment.
Training dog puppy needs time. But do not be unduly worried as it often takes a couple of weeks before it learns dog obedience. What you need is a little bit of patience and the amount of effort you put into it. One piece of good news is you do not have to spend hours to train dog puppies as it only takes a few minutes each day over a few times. Thats all it takes.
The very first task to train dog puppy is its obedience in simple commands like come, sit, heel, stay and fetch. These are easy to follow and most puppies are able to learn that quite fast. As they grow older and bigger, you can move on to include more advanced commands like rolling over, pawing and even play dead. One thing good about training dog puppies is they are very open towards learning. They are like blank pieces of paper ready to be written on. So training a puppy dog can be quite a fun experience especially when it starts responding to you.
Like kids, what they learn in their initial growing up months would be engrained in their memories. The puppy dog training for obedience would also shape their behaviors later. All it takes is a simple rule, stick with the few minutes per session routine and keep repeating as a reminder.
Puppy dog training for obedience is so important as untrained puppies can be rather mischievous. Since they are young, during their teething stage, they develop a natural chewing behavior. This can be quite damaging for your furniture as the holes they leave can be numerous in numbers. It is good to therefore start training dog puppies early so that they learn to differentiate what is wrong and what is right behavior.
Dog owners may resort to using dog training devices or products to aid puppy dog training but this is really not that essential. A little bit more of practicing and repeating the simple commands everyday would go a long way. The whole puppy dog training takes approximately a few months. Yes it may seem tough but the rewards would be great. At the end of the training, your puppy would grow up to be a loving and obedient dog that makes a great companion.
If you are keen to find out the specific commands to execute to properly teach and train your puppy, find out from my dog obedience website where you can learn some quick and effective dog obedience training techniques to train your puppy dog.

Your Pet's Peeve

How to Turn a Ruff Relocation into a Purrfect Pilgrimage
Animals have a very keen sense of their surroundings and they notice when routines change. Specifically, relocation can be very unsettling for pets. But by hiring a pet relocation service, a huge burden is lifted. And, in turn, both your and your pets fears can be eased.
Bridget Monrad, President of Happy Tails Travel, Inc., has been relocating peoples pets for over 12 years. Emotions run high when it comes to these special family members, she explains. A lot of trust is placed in the hands of pet movers. Part of that trust involves knowing what it takes to get a pet from point A to point B without incident.
For instance, sedating a pet before putting it on an airplane can be dangerous, if not deadly. If an animal has been sedated or even acts as though it has been sedated, the airline will refuse to let the animal on board, Monrad adds.
Trustworthiness is recognizable when a pet owner knows what to look for. Anthony Deniker, President of AnimalsAway.com recommends not hiring anyone that isnt a member of the Independent Pet & Animal Transport Assoc. (IPATA).
Theres a lot more involved than just dropping an animal off at the airport, said Deniker. A pet may need a proper kennel, a grooming, or even a vet check.

3 Steps to Effective Flea Control in Dogs and Cats
By Jean Morgan
Where there are dogs and cats, there are fleas. These persistent little parasites cause no end of problems for pets and their owners. Sometimes it seems no matter what we do to kill them, our pets are still infested with the little blighters. Why are they so hard to get rid of?
Lets have a closer look at the lifecycle of the flea. An adult flea will bite your dog or cat and have a blood meal. It will then 50- 100 eggs each day which will fall off your pet into the environment your backyard, your pets bed, your carpet. These eggs take up to a few weeks to hatch, depending on the temperature and humidity. When they hatch, the larvae actively seek warm, humid, shady areas to further develop, as they are very susceptible to heat and drying. As larvae, they undergo three developmental stages and feed mostly on the feces of adult fleas which contain dried blood, as well as organic debris. This stage can take up to 3 weeks.
Mature larvae produce a sticky cocoon, which protects them from heat and most insecticides. Adults emerge from the cocoon in response to high humidity, warm temperatures or vibrations. This can take anywhere from two weeks to a year, depending on conditions. Ive heard many times about people who go on extended holidays and come home to a flea plague the vibration caused by them walking through their house has stimulated the hatching of dormant cocoons. These adult fleas then have a blood meal and the cycle starts again. So, although your pet and home could be flea free right now, you may have an infestation again within a few weeks.
Its very important to understand the flea lifecycle so we can choose flea control products that are effective. Keeping in mind that the number of adult fleas on your pet represents only 1% of your total flea population, its easy to see why just using adulticides may not be effective. Read that again for every flea you see on your pet, there are another 99 in the environment as eggs, larvae or cocoons. That, I believe, is the main reason fleas are so hard to control. You need to break the lifecycle to reduce the flea population on your pet.
Given that the cocoon is resistant to insecticides, our only options are to kill the adults, kill the larvae or kill the eggs. As far as adulticides go, any of the spot on products are very effective Advantage, Frontline or Revolution. Advantage also has the added effect of killing larvae before they develop into pupae, thus breaking the lifecycle. Frontline Plus contains (S)-methoprene which is an insect growth regulator. This chemical is related to a juvenile growth hormone in the flea, and its presence allows the larva to develop into a pupa, but the pupa never emerges as an adult. Lufenuron in Program and Sentinel is another insect growth regulator which stops the production of chitin in the larval flea. Chitin is essential for the larvae to hatch from the egg, so no chitin means eggs dont hatch. Also, the adult flea will excrete Lufenuron in her faeces, and when the larvae feed on this, they also dont produce chitin. Chitin is essential for production of the external skeleton of the flea, so the larvae also die. Since Lufenuron relies on the adult flea biting the pet, its not a good option on its own for allergic dogs and cats.
I believe there are three steps to effective flea control in dogs and cats. Firstly, use an effective adulticide to stop the fleas biting your pet. Secondly, use a product that breaks the lifecycle to stop the constant reinfestation. Thirdly, dont give up. Keep up with the flea control even when you dont see fleas.
